Fraud Awareness – New Zealand
Product Description
Two people who corruptly attempted to profit from the Christchurch rebuild were recently convicted and sentenced on Serious Fraud Office charges.
The two were former Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA) and Ōtākaro Limited employees.
At sentencing, the Court identified the harm caused by the offending to their colleagues and employers, and the potential harm to New Zealand’s reputation and trust in the public sector. (For more details see the SFO media release here.)
Fraudulent behaviour exists in almost every workplace. It may be occurring in your business. Therefore, it is very important that your staff learn to do the following:
- Identify fraud in the workplace – this can be tricky because people who commit fraud often go to great lengths to hide it.
- Identify the consequences of fraud for the fraudster (the person committing the fraud).
- Prevent fraud from occurring.
- Report fraud when they suspect it has occurred.
The most powerful anti-fraud weapon are educated and aware employees. This Fraud course educates employees as to the types of behaviour that constitute fraud, and provides a comprehensive list of fraud indicators to foster internal monitoring.
Building a culture of awareness and responsibility can reduce the risk of fraud and increase detection rates, thereby reducing the monetary and other costs of fraud.
