Bullying and Sexual Harassment in Australian Local Government
Bullying and sexual harassment are serious issues that can have devastating consequences for individuals and organisations. In the context of Australian local government, these behaviours can be particularly harmful due to the hierarchical nature of the workplace and the potential for power imbalances.
Why these workshops matter
- Prevalence: Studies suggest that bullying and sexual harassment are more prevalent in certain industries, including local government, due to factors like power dynamics and workplace culture.
- Impact: These behaviours can lead to decreased morale, productivity, and job satisfaction, as well as increased absenteeism and turnover.
- Legal Implications: Employers in Australia have a legal obligation to provide a safe and harassment-free workplace. Failure to do so can result in significant legal and financial consequences.
Key issues in Local Government:
- Power Imbalances: The hierarchical structure of local government can create power imbalances between employees, making it easier for bullying and harassment to occur.
- Workplace Culture: A toxic or negative workplace culture can contribute to a climate where bullying and harassment are tolerated or even encouraged.
- Lack of awareness: Some employees may not be aware of the signs of bullying and harassment, or they may be afraid to report incidents.
Workshop Objectives:
These workshops aim to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to:
- Prevent: Identify risk factors and implement strategies to prevent bullying and sexual harassment from occurring.
- Address: Recognise the signs of bullying and harassment and take appropriate action to address incidents.
- Respond: Develop effective policies and procedures for handling complaints and investigations.
- Create a Positive Workplace: Foster a culture of respect, inclusivity, and psychological safety.
By attending these workshops, local government employees can learn how to create a healthier, more productive, and harassment-free workplace. For more information about our Mental health & Wellbeing Suite please contact us.
GRC Solutions recently conducted an effective and engaging bullying and harassment training session for all staff at Edward River Council. Led by Sophie, the trainer, the session was well-received by employees, who appreciated her knowledge and ability to keep everyone actively participating. The training was especially valuable as it had not been held for several years, and Sophie highlighted important legislative updates and provided clear guidance on acceptable workplace behaviours. This session reinforced a strong understanding of what is and isn’t permitted in the workplace, contributing to a positive and informed workplace culture.ERC would highly recommend this training and we look forward to continuing to work with GRC Solutions into the future.
