Indigenous Cultural Awareness – Australia
Product Description
Improving indigenous cultural awareness in the workplace
Promoting better empathy and understanding between workers
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people represent 3.2% of the Australian population. However, due to colonial oppression, Indigenous people face significant barriers to employment and are underrepresented in the workforce. All workers have a responsibility to understand these barriers, and support diversity in the workplace to facilitate better intercultural connections.
This course comprehensively explores Indigenous culture to expose learners to the richness of Indigenous cultural practices and dismantle stereotypical fictions. As ignorance perpetuates disconnection and stigma, cultural awareness can foster better empathy and understanding between workers.
The course first outlines the critical gaps in education, healthcare and employment between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, enlightening learners as to the barriers Indigenous people face as a result of colonialism. The lesson then explains the importance of cultural integration and its many benefits. To foster such integration, the course describes the complexities of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communication methods, so that they can be better understood by non-Indigenous Australians.
Learners will be educated on key culturally- sensitive terms to describe Indigenous people, culture and Country, symbols such as the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags and events with cultural significance. The course then goes into further detail about various Indigenous cultural practices, such as familial structures, kinship, the Dreaming and more.
