Managing the risks of off-site activities with children in your care

Activities such as camps and excursions can offer important and valuable experiences that can best be attained by travelling to off-site locations. However, all camps and excursions must have a valid purpose with demonstrable benefits (such as educational value) because they also involve higher than normal levels of risk.

This interactive course is designed to help you understand how to identify and manage risks involved in camps and excursions.

The training covers the important legal concept of a “duty of care”, who it applies to, and what it looks like in the context of camps and excursions. It stresses the importance of proper planning before the off site activity, and helps learners identify common risk areas and how to put risk management into practice when children come into your care.

In the event an incident or “near-miss” arises, learners will understand how to respond appropriately, including by ensuring child safety, reporting appropriately, and improving risk controls. Alongside responding to individual incidents, the course will explore the development of school policies that ensure camps and excursions are undertaken safely and with standardised procedure.
